The secure area surrounding a legally protected tree is known as a “Tree Protection Zone” (TPZ). The entire area of the site that will be shielded from disturbances, such as construction-related traffic and material storage, is included in the tree protection zone. Based on the regulated tree’s diameter, the minimum Tree Protection Zones are determined. The TPZ rules specify the bare minimum area that must be conserved for the tree’s anchor and transport roots, however feeder roots that extend beyond the TPZ may still be lost.
